Description | The renowned Rutledge family of South Carolina lived in the "Big House" of the Hampton Plantation where this handsome paper was found. In its original blue-toned coloring, the paper is believed to have been created in England about 1760. This "Big House" was built in 1730. It was here that George Washington stayed when he made his triumphant tour of the South in 1792. Of brick, black cypress and all-heart yellow pine, the sturdy home was also headquarters for General Francis Marion, the famous "Swamp Fox" of the Revolution. |
