TitleRochambeau
CollectionThomas Strahan (pre-1975)
CategoryHistoric Reproductions
DescriptionA reproduction of an antique wallpaper found in Newport, Rhode Island, on the walls of an old mansion once used by General George Washington as his headquarters. It was here that General Washington greeted Count Rochambeau on his first visit to America, when he arrived to command French troops helping the Revolutionary forces. Rochambeau landed in Newport on the 10th of July, 1780. The scenes depicted in this old wallpaper are undoubtedly of those strolling players who were the fore-runners of the modern circus. The word "Matamoros," or, translated, "Kill the Moors," at the top of the big tent, indicates that the scenes were laid in Spain.
